Želiv, opatský chrám Narození Panny Marie
Information
The first monastery church in Želiv was built in the Romanesque style (in the years 1139-1149). It however collapsed in 1375 due to a fire, and the Premonstratensian brothers had a Gothic church built, the beautiful presbytery of which can still be seen today. The Gothic nave was damaged in another fire in 1712 and was rebuilt by the famous architect Santini in its present form. Thanks to the so-called Santini’s Baroque Gothic, the church an architectural gem further afield. It forms part of the monastery complex of the Želiv Premonstratensian Monastery.
