Information
The church of Our Lady of Sorrows was built in Sloup in 1754, so the pilgrimage tradition has lasted there for almost 300 years. It is linked with the revered statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, which is placed in the church. The main pilgrimage festival is on “Palm Friday” – the Friday before Palm Sunday. The pilgrimage season lasts from Spring to the third Sunday in October, but pilgrims come there during the whole year. The church is decorated with frescoes and paintings by Kaspar Sambach, the painter and the director of the Vienna Academy. They are very important and favourite example of his art in the Czech Republic. Countess Karolina of Roggendorf, the founder of the church, is buried in the crypt of the church.
